My artwork is inspired by Oregon landscape. Reflected in my work is the presence of mountains, the flow of rivers and the vast expanse of the ocean. My childhood memories of being outside, ground me and provide structure for my current work. Does the air smell hot? Do I feel the cold in my breath? What are the colors of the fields, flowers and sky? What shapes within the landscape am I drawn to? These sensations and my reactions guide me to my finished piece. My wish is that people viewing my work will feel their sense of place and belonging wherever it is.
I did not start painting until my late 50's. I didn’t consider myself artistic. I have a close friend who has been an artist her entire life. She was one of those kids who was drawing and doodling all the time. I would watch her paint and marvel at the colors she would mix, the tools she would use and her process from start to finish. I wanted that. I started painting with acrylics and I painted and painted and painted some more. The more I worked, the more I want to discover.
I felt an awakening that perhaps I too, could be an artist. I take classes, attend lectures, open houses and exhibits where I learn from other artists. I immerse myself in learning environments and joined communities dedicated to the exploration of what it means to paint, to create, to live a life dedicated to art. I thank all of artists who inspire me and helped me along the way. I now live a life of joyful creation.
